Best Scenic Drives in Arizona
Fall days are perfect timing for scenic road trips. With the vast differences between landscapes all around Arizona, this state is the perfect opportunity to hop in the car and see some memorable sites. We’ve put a short list together of the best scenic drives around all major regions of Arizona.
There’s a drive north of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, that is about 82 miles, and well worth the trip north. It is a part of Route US 89A, which starts at Bitter Springs and stretches to the Kaibab Plateau. You’ll see not only beautiful red cliff faces, but also grassy plains and forests of trees.
If you’re not up for a drive up north, you can stay a little closer to Phoenix, and experience this glorious scenic drive. This scenic drive, on State Route 88, will take you on a 42-mile-trip through volcanic landscape alongside the Salt River.
For those in the mood to go a little more South, west of Tucson, you’ll find a fantastic roadtrip opportunity in the Sky Island Parkway. This trip is about an hour and 27 miles long. You’ll find yourself driving through forest as a vast change from the desert of Tucson. This drive can be found on Forest Service 833.
Back up north, you’ll find magnificent views in Sedona. State Route 179 offers red rock views that cannot be beat. You’ll drive around and through red, sandstone rocks that are recognizable from Sedona postcards. Along this drive, you’ll also notice many creeks and forest sites. This is definitely one of the best drives in the state.
